    BPS Saturation from Null Reduction

    We show that any dd-dimensional strictly stationary, asymptotically Minkowskian solution (d≥4)(d\ge 4) of a null reduction of d+1d+1-dimensional pure gravity must saturate the BPS bound provided that the KK vector field can be identified appropriately.     OntoAIMS: ontological approach to courseware authoring

    In this paper we discuss how current ontology concepts can be beneficial for more flexible and semantic rich description of the authoring process and for the provision of authoring support of Intelligent Educational Systems (IES) with respect to the three main authoring modules: domain editing, course composition and resource management. We take a semantic perspective on the knowledge representation within such systems and explore the interoperability between the various ontological structures for domain, instructional and resource modeling and the modeling of the entire authoring process. We build upon our research on Authoring Task Ontology and exemplify it within OntoAIMS system. We present authoring scenarios and show their mapping with authoring task ontology. Further we discuss the OntoAIMS framework for management of electronic learning objects (resources) and their usage in the automatic generation of course templates for the authors. Finally, we describe our architecture, based on the ontological specification of the authoring process

    Families of Roles: A new theory of occurrent-dependent roles

    PublishedRoles are important both theoretically and practically for modelling the world around us. Although many theories of roles have been proposed, there remain aspects which are little understood. In this paper we investigate roles and their contexts from a temporal point of view.We introduce the idea of a family of occurrent-dependent roles as a means to organise prospective and retrospective derived roles around an original role from which they are derived. By this means we account for the existence of groups of similar roles which are difficult to distinguish without a careful analysis of the temporal aspects.     Spin configuration in a frustrated ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic thin film system

    We have studied the magnetic configuration in ultrathin antiferromagnetic Mn films grown around monoatomic steps on an Fe(001) surface by spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and ab-initio-parametrized self-consistent real-space tight binding calculations in which the spin quantization axis is independent for each site thus allowing noncollinear magnetism. Mn grown on Fe(001) presents a layered antiferromagnetic structure. In the regions where the Mn films overgrows Fe steps the magnetization of the surface layer is reversed across the steps. Around these defects a frustration of the antiferromagnetic order occurs. Due to the weakened magnetic coupling at the central Mn layers, the amount of frustration is smaller than in Cr and the width of the wall induced by the step does not change with the thickness, at least for coverages up to seven monolayers.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure

Adapting business data and management information to support specific user actions in context is an ongoing topic of research. Approaches typically focus on providing mechanisms to improve specific information access and transcoding but not on how the information can be accessed in a mobile, dynamic and ad-hoc manner. Although web ontology has been used to facilitate the loading of data warehouses, less research has been carried out on ontology based mobile reporting. This paper explores how business data can be modeled and accessed using the web ontology language and then re-used to provide the invisibility of pervasive access; uncovering more effective architectural models for adaptive information system strategies of this type. This exploratory work is guided in part by a vision of business intelligence that is highly distributed, mobile and fluid, adapting to sensory understanding of the underlying environment in which it operates. A proof-of concept mobile and ambient data access architecture is developed in order to further test the viability of such an approach. The paper concludes with an ontology engineering framework for systems of this type – named UBIS-ONTO

    Optical Flow on Evolving Surfaces with an Application to the Analysis of 4D Microscopy Data

    We extend the concept of optical flow to a dynamic non-Euclidean setting. Optical flow is traditionally computed from a sequence of flat images. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce variational motion estimation for images that are defined on an evolving surface. Volumetric microscopy images depicting a live zebrafish embryo serve as both biological motivation and test data.Comment: The final publication is available at link.springer.co

    The impact of resources on decision making

    Decision making is a significant activity within industry and although much attention has been paid to the manner in which goals impact on how decision making is executed, there has been less focus on the impact decision making resources can have. This article describes an experiment that sought to provide greater insight into the impact that resources can have on how decision making is executed. Investigated variables included the experience levels of decision makers and the quality and availability of information resources. The experiment provided insights into the variety of impacts that resources can have upon decision making, manifested through the evolution of the approaches, methods, and processes used within it. The findings illustrated that there could be an impact on the decision-making process but not on the method or approach, the method and process but not the approach, or the approach, method, and process. In addition, resources were observed to have multiple impacts, which can emerge in different timescales. Given these findings, research is suggested into the development of resource-impact models that would describe the relationships existing between the decision-making activity and resources, together with the development of techniques for reasoning using these models. This would enhance the development of systems that could offer improved levels of decision support through managing the impact of resources on decision making
